Holy Week is a time to remember events that led up to Christ’s ultimate sacrifice for us on the cross. Here are 20 Holy Week Bible Verses

During Holy Week we can reflect on the final events that led to the cross and Jesus’ defeat of both sin and death. There are many events that lead up to the cross, and through each, we are reminded of all that Jesus endured for the hope set before Him.

Holy Week is considered to begin on Palm Sunday and lasts through Easter Sunday. Though there is often great anticipation for this week, especially leading up to Easter Sunday, a wonderful way to prepare your heart and mind is to meditate on scripture that walks you through the days that lead up to Easter Sunday.

These 20 verses feature different events that took place during Holy Week and serve as a great reminder of what Christ has done on our behalf.

20 Holy Week Bible Verses

1. Isaiah 53:3-5 – By His Wounds We Are Healed

He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.

2. John 11:25-26 – He is the Resurrection and the Life

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

3. Luke 24:2-3 – The Stone Was Rolled Away

They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

4. Matthew 21:6-9 – Hosanna to the Son of David

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on.

A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

5. Hebrews 11:6 – It is Impossible to Please God Without Faith

And without faith it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

6. 1 Corinthians 15:3-8 – He Died, Was Buried and Raised On the Third Day

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.

After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

7. Romans 6:8-11 – He Died To Sin Once For All

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.

The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

8. Philippians 2:8 – He Became Obedient to Death

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death — even death on a cross!

9. 1 Corinthians 3:16 – Our Bodies are the Temple of God

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?

10. Matthew 28:6 – He is Risen

He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.

11. Romans 5:8 – While We Were Sinners, Christ Died For Us

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

12. Luke 22:2-6 – Judas Betrays Jesus

And the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.

Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.

They were delighted and agreed to give him money. He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.

13. 1 Corinthians 5:7 – Christ Our Passover Lamb

Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch — as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

14. Mark 16:2-6 – He Has Risen! He is Not Here.

Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.

15. John 5:19-21 – Whatever the Father Does the Son Also Does

Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.

16. John 13:1-15 – Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.

After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.

When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

17. Acts 2:38 – Repent and Be Baptized

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

18. Mark 14:22-26 – The Last Supper

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”

Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

“This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them. “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

19. Mark 15:25-26 – The King of the Jews

It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.

20. Hebrews 12:1-3 – Fix Our Eyes On Jesus

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.

For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
