22 Bible Verses on Loving Your Enemies

Use these Bible verses on loving your enemies to see how God shows us why and how to love people even when they don’t deserve it.

The love that God calls us to is extraordinary love. He first showed it to us, when He sent His Son to come into the world and to die for us. He did not die for those who were righteous or who loved Him, He did for sinners, who were His enemies.

Now, He calls us to a new kind of love. Not the love of the world, that loves only those who love them back, but who loves even their enemies, who hate them, spitefully use them, or curse them.

In our own strength, we don’t possess this kind of love, but God’s Word provides guidance, and He gives us the ability to love our enemies.

He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?

And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

2. Proverbs 25:21-22 – Give to Your Enemy In Need

If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; for you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.

3. Luke 6:27-36 – Do Good to those Who Hate You

But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also.

If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you?

Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

4. Matthew 7:12 – Treat People How You Want To Be Treated

6. 1 Corinthians 13:1-8 – Without Love, We Are Nothing

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

7. Matthew 5:8-12 – Blessed Are The Peacemakers

Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

8. Romans 12:9-11 – Love Without Hypocrisy

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
